What is the Yeosu Dongdong drum Festival?
The Yeosu Dongdong drum Festival was created to clearly establish the regional and cultural identity of the Goryeo song Dongdong (動動), while also promoting General Yoo Tak (柳濯), a lesser-known historical figure from Yeosu, to a wider audience.
The main programs of the Yeosu Dongdongbuk Festival include a street drum parade, opening ceremony, invited performances by main artists, a drum competition, special busker performances, citizen fringe shows, master classes with public participation, and a variety of other hands-on experience programs.
The experience programs are open to participants of all ages, from children to seniors. Among them, the street drum parade—where citizens directly take part and march through the streets—has gained increasing public enthusiasm each year with the participation of more diverse groups. In addition to interactive activities, the festival also offers a wide range of performances, such as EDM shows, guest singer concerts, and drum performances, providing rich and engaging entertainment for the public.
The “2024 Yeosu Dongdongbuk Festival,” Yeosu’s flagship hands-on cultural festival, concluded successfully on the 10th after attracting approximately 82,000 visitors. This year, as part of the ESI program, the festival placed a strong emphasis on carbon neutrality and environmental protection.From the morning hours, large crowds of citizens and visitors gathered to enjoy performances open to all ages, including citizen fringe shows and the Dongdong Artist Competition.
The festival opened in spectacular fashion on the first day with a fireworks display over the sea in front of Seonso.The highlight of the Dongdongbuk Festival, the “Drum Parade,” featured drum artists marching approximately 700 meters while presenting a variety of drum performances, encouraging audience participation and sustaining the festival’s energetic atmosphere.
The newly introduced “Dongdong Global Village” offered picnic-themed relaxation spaces along with cultural experiences and performances from eight different countries.In addition, the festival drew great popularity with a special guest performance by singer Kim Jang-hoon, children’s regular shows, magic performances, a flea market, and many other attractions.
